WBro Alf Shaw told the lodge that at the ceremony the Russian Ambassador Alexander Yakovenko had paid tribute to all the crews of the Artic Convoys, who had risked their lives to get vital supplies through to support the Soviet's 2nd World War efforts. Thousands had lost their lives in these treacherous convoys, and he said their efforts had shortened the war.
WBro Alf Shaw also explained that until last year (2013), the government had barred the servicemen from displaying Russian medals, but in a change of heart, it began awarding former sailors its own medal last year – the Arctic Star – after agreeing to let Russia decorate the veterans officially. The Ushakov medal recognises foreign fighters’ efforts to protect Russia.
