There were 19 founder members\, who came from a geographical spread of 14 different lodges\, not all of which were local to Middleton. 4 were Oldham Lodges and 4 were Manchester Lodges\, the rest were from Audenshaw\, Stretford\, Moss Side\, Salford\, Sale and Liverpool. \nThe sponsoring lodge for Horton Lodge’s consecration was Imperial George Lodge No 78\, even though there were no Imperial George Lodge members amongst the founder members. The petition made to His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent on 14th May 1973\, stated that it had received the support and approval of the Worshipful Master\, Wardens and Brethren of Imperial George Lodge No 78. \n10 of the 19 founders were past masters\, and 9 were Master Masons. Of these 19 founding members\, only 4 went on to become Worshipful Masters of Horton Lodge\, the first was WBro Brian Swallow who was installed at the consecration ceremony in January 1974\, followed by WBro Gerrard Grimes in ‘75 and then WBro Edward Jordon in 1975. WBro Dr Victor Sereno\, who was only a Master Mason when the Lodge was consecrated whet on to be Master twice\, first in 1989 and again in 1999. \nWhilst Horton Lodge has always been a Middleton Lodge\, its consecration ceremony was conducted at Manchester Masonic Hall\, Bridge Street Manchester. This Lodge Room where we are this evening was built in 1972 and was fully in use\, but it is likely that the numbers attending the consecration\, 142 recorded on the minutes of the meeting\, dictated that it was held in the much bigger Bridge Street Lodge room. Indeed\, around that time it was usual practice for Middleton’s two biggest Lodges\, Imperial George No 78 and Langley No 3989 to hold their annual Installations in Bridge Street as the attendance numbers were regularly in excess of 100 brethren. \nThe consecration ceremony was conducted by Very Worshipful Brother Frederick W Towns\, Pass Grand Sword Bearer\, who was the Deputy Provincial Grand Master at that time. The installation of the first Worshipful Master\, WBro Brian Swallow was conducted by Worshipful Brother Bartle Hodgkiss\, Pass Assistant Grand DC\, who was the Assistant Provincial Grand Master. \nAcross the last 50 years Horton Lodge has had a total 33 different brethren installed as Worshipful Master\, 8 of which have done 2 years in office\, 3 that have done 3 years and 1\, Worshipful Brother Jimmy Burns who did 4 years in office. \nHorton Lodge is Lodge Number 8528 on the register of United Grand Lodge of England\, and Lodge Number 8529 is Delamere Lodge\, in Audenshaw which was consecrated just a couple of weeks following Horton’s consecration. \nThis Lodge Room here in Middleton was built and completed in 1972\, and Horton Lodge was the second of three lodges that have begun their Masonic journey here. The first was Middleton Lodge of Installed Masters No 8517 in October 1973\, and the third was Horton Lodge’s daughter Lodge\, Tonge Hall Lodge No 8763which was consecrated in May 1977. \nand was consecrated on 18th January 1974. It has a daughter lodge\, Tonge Hall No. 8763\, which received its warrant on 9th February 1977 and was consecrated on 18th May 1977 \nI’d like to close by clarifying how Horton Lodge came to be called Horton Lodge by sharing a some information that was presented as part of the Lodge’s proposal to His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent. Whilst there is a pub called the Horton Arms not so far from here in Chadderton\, this isn’t the reason why Horton Lodge was so called\, though I suspect the Horton Arms gained it’s name for the same historical reason as Horton Lodge has. This comes from back in 1684 when Joshua Horton\, of Sowerby in Yorkshire\, married into the Radcliffe family that owned the Chadderton Manor. The Horton family continued to own the Manor and the estate land around it for the next few hundred years\, and the brethren who founded Horton Lodge were mindful of all this history of the area and thought it appropriate to consider the name Horton for the proposed lodge.
